Photography captures light on a film to produce image, so a
source of light should be established before you begin taking any pictures. In the early days, man used sunlight as his source of illumination in photography. It was the only light source suitable for exposing
slow films which was used during those times. Today films are much more sensitive to light and various light sources have been developed by photographer to enhance the effects of their work of art. These light sources include the following: tungsten lamps, tungsten-halogen lamps,
fluorescent lamps, and electronic flash.
Generally there are two types of light sources: daylight and artificial light. Daylight is a term used in photography that includes all forms of light that originates from the sun, not just direct sunlight. Skylight is different than sunlight. It appears bluer than sunlight because it is caused by the scatter of shorter wavelengths of light in the atmosphere. Artificial light is divided in to two types: spotlight and floodlights. Spotlights provide a concentrated beam of light to the subject while floodlights are give a more diffused and spread out light. By using accessories, such as deflectors, a photographer can control the light to provide different effects.
